One of the best parts about living near New York City is how easy it is to escape it.

When we plan our “big” vacations, we’re usually hopping on a plane. But sometimes, what you need is a change of scenery, not a packed itinerary. That’s where road trips come in—and lucky for us, some of the best places in the Northeast are just a few hours away by car.

See how close these amazing destinations are to New York City—perfect for your next weekend getaway.

Whether you live in the NYC area or you're visiting New York and want to add a second destination, these five road trip spots are close enough to make it easy—but far enough to feel like a real getaway.

(And if you're looking to combine your NYC trip with a road trip, that's something we help families plan all the time—just reach out and we can help you map it out!)

Each of these destinations has something special to offer—historic charm, beach-town nostalgia, mountain air, or coastal magic. We’ve personally visited most of these ourselves, and the rest are high on our planning list.

🏞️ 1. Lake George, NY – Adirondack Charm with Historic Luxury

(Approx. 3.5–4 hours from NYC)

Lake George views from The Sagamore—peaceful, panoramic, and perfect for families.

If your idea of the perfect escape includes lake views, mountain air, and a resort that feels like the real-life version of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, you’re going to love Lake George.

Tucked into the southern edge of the Adirondacks, this destination is perfect for families who want to unplug without giving up comfort—or wine with a view. Whether you're floating in a boat, hiking a waterfall trail, or relaxing fireside with s’mores, Lake George strikes a rare balance between rustic charm and easy luxury.

We stayed at The Sagamore, a historic resort perched on its own island in the middle of the lake. The white Adirondack chairs, sweeping water views, and cozy lodge interiors made it an instant favorite. It’s upscale but not uptight, family-friendly but still special enough for a milestone celebration.

A family getaway worth remembering—moments from our stay at The Sagamore.

🍁 Why Lake George is Worth the Drive:

Unbeatable Views & Outdoor Adventure

Lake George is known as the “Queen of American Lakes” for a reason. The water is deep, clear, and framed by rolling green hills that burst into color come fall. You can kayak, paddleboard, or cruise aboard a classic steamboat—just don’t forget your camera.

The Sagamore: Family-Friendly Luxury

From the outdoor heated pool to the rec center with arcade games and mini golf, The Sagamore checks every box for a memorable family weekend. There’s also a beautiful spa, multiple restaurants, fire pits for s’mores, and a shuttle to their private lakeside beach club (with bathrooms, concessions, and plenty of seating). If you’ve ever dreamed of staying somewhere that feels like Wilderness Lodge meets the Grand Floridian, this is it.

Small Town Feels with Big Vacation Energy

Beyond the resort, Lake George Village offers everything from old-school ice cream stands to mini golf, boat rentals, and classic souvenir shops. There are also great day trip options nearby like Fort Ticonderoga, Prospect Mountain, or Lake Luzerne for whitewater rafting.

Seasonal Magic All Year Long

Come in the summer for lake days, leaf-peep in the fall, ski nearby in winter, or plan a cozy holiday season escape. It’s one of those places that shifts with the season—and somehow always feels like the right time to go.

🏖️ 2. Cape May, NJ – Seaside Nostalgia with Disney Beach Club Charm

(Approx. 3 hours from NYC)

Historic Victorian homes lining a charming Cape May street

Cape May’s storybook architecture sets the tone for a charming getaway.

Cape May feels like the kind of place Walt Disney himself would have loved—which is probably why it served as the inspiration for one of our favorite Walt Disney World resorts: the Beach Club. Pastel Victorian houses, charming inns, cozy ice cream parlors, and wraparound porches? Yes, please.

This beautifully preserved Victorian beach town is one of the oldest seaside resorts in the country, yet still manages to fly under the radar for many East Coast travelers. Whether you’re escaping for a long weekend or adding it on to a NYC vacation itinerary, Cape May delivers family-friendly charm, relaxing beaches, and just enough retro flair to feel magical.

☀️ Why Cape May is One of the Best NYC Getaways for Families

Pristine Beaches That Keep It Simple

Cape May’s beaches are wide, peaceful, and postcard-worthy—with soft sand, gentle surf, and calm water that makes it perfect for younger kids.

We love that you don’t need to overpack or overthink it here: just bring your towels, pick a spot, and you’re on vacation.

Classic beach day energy—low-key, beautiful, and easy to love.

Charming Downtown and Walkable Streets

Cape May’s historic district is made for slow strolls—past colorful porches, quirky shops, and cozy cafés.

Want to lean into the nostalgia? Book a horse-drawn carriage ride and tour the town like it's 1890. It’s a hit with both kids and adults.

Nature, Wildlife, and a Bit of Whimsy

Cape May is a top destination for birdwatching and whale watching, and tours run throughout the year. If you prefer staying on dry land, rent bikes or explore the nearby wetlands for a scenic adventure with minimal effort.

Cape May’s Food Scene Is Full of Character

From lobster rolls to homemade fudge, the downtown area is a food-lover’s playground. But if you’re traveling with kids (or nostalgic grown-ups), there’s one thing you can’t skip:

Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy is a Cape May institution—and the pastel displays alone are worth the visit.

A sweet souvenir from the Jersey Shore—Fralinger’s taffy is a must.

Where to Stay in Cape May

Our pick for families? Congress Hall, America’s oldest seaside resort. It’s beautifully updated with a pool, lawn games, seasonal activities, and an unbeatable location just steps from the beach. If you’re a Disney fan, you’ll love how much this place feels like a real-world Beach Club moment.

Not Just for Summer

While Cape May shines in July and August, fall and spring are underrated gems—fewer crowds, crisp air, and even more magic. In winter, it transforms into a snow-globe-worthy town decked out in holiday lights.

⚓ 3. Newport, RI & Cape Cod, MA – East Coast Elegance with Coastal Disney Vibes

(Approx. 3.5–4.5 hours from NYC)

Castle Hill Lighthouse at sunset on the Rhode Island coast

Romantic coastal views like this make Newport one of New England’s crown jewels.

If Cape May is all beach-town charm and boardwalk energy, Newport and Cape Cod are her sophisticated older sisters—coastal classics with just the right mix of history, luxury, and breezy New England beauty. And for our fellow Disney fans? These two feel like the real-world inspiration behind the Yacht Club Resort, offering that signature blend of nautical polish, timeless design, and beachfront relaxation.

We couldn’t pick just one of these iconic seaside spots, and luckily, if you’re road-tripping from NYC, you don’t have to. Newport is directly en route to the Cape, so you can stop in one or stay in both. Whether you’re dreaming of lobster rolls, oceanfront walks, or soaking in that crisp Atlantic air, this stretch of the East Coast delivers.

🏛️ Why This Coastal Combo Deserves a Spot on Your List:

Newport, Rhode Island – Gilded Glamour by the Sea

The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport with flowers and ocean view

Refined and right on the Cliff Walk—The Chanler brings that Yacht Club-meets-Liberty Tree energy to life.

Newport is famous for its cliffside mansions and historic sailing culture, but it’s also surprisingly family-friendly. Start with the Cliff Walk, which offers breathtaking views and a glimpse of America’s most extravagant summer homes. If you’ve got younger kids in tow, the Exploration Center & Aquarium offers hands-on exhibits and marine life encounters right on the water.

The food here is phenomenal. We loved The Mooring for upscale seafood with a view, and The Black Pearl for that cozy, colonial tavern feel. History buffs—and Disney adults—will get a thrill at The White Horse Tavern, the oldest operating tavern in the United States. It feels like the real-world version of Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts – Nautical Nostalgia Meets Casual Luxury

Classic shingled Cape Cod beach cottage

Cape Cod is everything you imagine when you hear 'New England summer': charming towns, beaches with windswept dunes, and lobster rolls eaten in salty air.

Cape Cod is everything you imagine when you hear “New England summer”—weathered shingles, hydrangeas, sailboats, seafood shacks, and bike trails that wind through salt marshes and forests. It’s an iconic road trip stop that offers plenty for both families and couples.

We’ve been eyeing Chatham Bars Inn for years. It’s the Cape’s answer to deluxe Disney—complete with a beachfront pool, cozy fine dining, a kids club, and that rare ability to feel both luxurious and low-pressure. It’s a place where you can sip wine in your sandals while your kids chase hermit crabs on the beach.

Want something more low-key? There are tons of charming rentals and smaller boutique hotels throughout Chatham, Eastham, and Orleans that feel like a home away from home.

Cape Cod Is Not Just for Summer

Chatham Bars Inn in Cape Cod decorated for the holidays

Cape Cod in the off-season—winter-snow sparkling, cozy, quiet, and just as magical.

Here’s the thing most people miss: the Cape is stunning in fall and magical in winter. We’ve seen Chatham Bars Inn decked out for the holidays, and it made us want to book a winter trip right then and there. Picture roaring fires, twinkle lights, snowy beach walks, and cozy meals overlooking the ocean.

And if you’re a fall foliage person? The Cape comes alive in September and October, with fewer crowds, better room rates, and weather that’s still perfect for coastal walks, coffee runs, and bike rides through crunchy leaves.

Speaking of coffee—MaryAnn’s Café in Chatham is one of our favorite spots. It’s unpretentious, local, and absolutely worth stopping for whether you're staying nearby or just passing through. The pastries, the coffee, the vibe—it’s exactly what you want on a New England morning.

Why These Two Work So Well Together

Both destinations offer classic East Coast beauty, but they’re different enough to complement each other:

  • Newport = historic, compact, perfect for a long weekend

  • Cape Cod = sprawling, laid-back, ideal for longer stays or families
And the best part? You can absolutely do both in one trip—building a route that blends high-end relaxation with breezy coastal nostalgia.

🏔️ 4. Lake Placid, NY – Mountain Magic, Olympic History, and Rustic Luxury

(Approx. 4.5–5 hours from NYC)

Kids swimming, paddling, and jumping into the lake at Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid

Unplugged joy—swimming, paddleboarding, and lake days are what Lake Placid weekends are made of.

We booked Lake Placid for a quick family escape that didn’t require rearranging our entire summer. With kids in camp and a bigger vacation already on the calendar, we were looking for something easy, refreshing, and just far enough away to feel like a real change of pace.

What we found was one of the most unexpectedly special getaways we’ve ever taken—and a place we’ve been dreaming of returning to ever since.

Tucked into the Adirondack Mountains, Lake Placid offers a rare blend of outdoor adventure, Olympic history, and cozy mountain-town charm, all wrapped in the kind of atmosphere that instantly makes you slow down and breathe deeper.

❄️ Why Lake Placid is a Must for a Long Weekend:

Olympic Adventures for the Whole Family

As a two-time Winter Olympic host city, Lake Placid still carries that competitive magic. Kids (and grown-ups) can zoom down the Cliffside Coaster, tour the Olympic Jumping Complex, or explore the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. Even if you’re not a sports enthusiast, it’s fascinating to see the legacy of world-class athletes echoing through the village.

Ride the Olympic track in a family-friendly way—this coaster is unforgettable.

Nature That’s Actually Accessible

One of the best things about Lake Placid is that you don’t have to be a hardcore hiker to enjoy the outdoors.

  • High Falls Gorge is perfect for families—it’s stroller-friendly and offers jaw-dropping waterfall views.

  • Whiteface Mountain is a must-do: drive most of the way up, then take an elevator inside the mountain to reach the summit. It feels part national park, part fantasy novel.

Whiteface Lodge: A Real-Life Wilderness Lodge

Our stay at Whiteface Lodge was a highlight—not just of the trip, but of all our Northeast travels.

Massive timber beams, cozy fireplaces, and warm lighting create the kind of inviting atmosphere that instantly wraps around you. There’s a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a game room, on-site dining, a private lakefront area, and even nightly s’mores. It felt like the Wilderness Lodge brought to life, but with more space, more stillness, and a deeper connection to the landscape around it.

We find ourselves talking about this hotel all the time. It was that good—and that memorable.

Charming Downtown & Road Trip Treats

Downtown Lake Placid is filled with small-town delights: independent bookstores, gear shops, cafés, and one of our personal favorites—Adirondack Popcorn Company. They have wildly creative flavors and make the perfect souvenir for the drive home (or the couch, later).

A Main Street favorite—Lake Placid’s popcorn shop is a must for road trip snacks.

A Year-Round Escape Worth Repeating

Visit in summer for lake days and mountain air, in fall for iconic Adirondack foliage, or in winter for skiing and full lodge-core coziness. Lake Placid is the kind of place that shifts beautifully with the seasons—and somehow always feels like the exact trip you needed.

🐚 5. Kennebunkport, ME – Coastal Calm and Storybook New England Charm

(Approx. 4.5–5 hours from NYC)

Sunset over Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport

Beautiful watercolor sunsets at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport.

Kennebunkport might be the most magical place we’ve ever stumbled into. We originally visited in search of a quiet, outdoorsy summer escape during a hectic year—and it completely captured our hearts. Since then, it’s become a place we return to in our minds often, imagining crisp beach walks, salt air, and sunsets over Goose Rocks Beach.

Tucked along Maine’s southern coast, Kennebunkport is effortlessly charming—filled with classic shingle-style cottages, cozy cafés, slow mornings, and long, golden evenings. It’s a destination that invites you to slow down, unplug, and breathe.

🌅 Why Kennebunkport Is the Trip You'll Want to Repeat:

Goose Rocks Beach: Peaceful, Playful, and Perfect

This beach alone is worth the drive. Shallow and serene, it’s ideal for little ones to explore, splash, and wander safely. At low tide, the sand stretches for what feels like miles, revealing tidal pools and hidden treasures underfoot. During high tide, you can swim out and still stand waist-deep in calm water.

At sunset, it becomes its own kind of magic. We’ve picnicked here, snacks in hand, watching the sky turn pink and orange as the kids played with sand-covered feet and big, happy energy. It’s one of those rare places where time actually seems to slow down.

Soft skies and sandbars at Kennebunkport’s most peaceful beach.

Coastal Adventure, Without the Overwhelm

For such a tranquil place, there’s so much to do beyond the beach:

  • Rent bikes and ride along the Eastern Trail

  • Kayak through quiet inlets

  • Book a whale watching or lobster boat excursion

  • Visit the Seashore Trolley Museum, a surprisingly delightful hit with kids and grown-ups alike

Everything is nearby, but nothing feels rushed. That balance is part of the magic.

The Seashore Trolley Museum is a hands-on favorite—ride and explore over 300 vintage trolleys and trains.

Incredible Food, Small-Town Style

If you’ve read anything else on this blog, you know we plan most of our trips around food—and Kennebunkport is no exception.

  • The Clam Shack is iconic for a reason—don’t skip the lobster roll

  • The Boathouse on Main Street is our go-to for relaxed dinners and sunset cocktails

  • Mornings in Paris is a Magic Journeys team favorite—croissants, macarons, and French pastries so good you’ll feel like you took a detour through Paris

  • And yes, we’ve genuinely considered planning a return trip just for another cone at Goose Rocks Dairy. It’s that good.

Mornings in Paris is a Magic Journeys team favorite and a must-stop, with croissants, macarons, and French pastries so delicious you’ll think you were sitting in France.

A Year-Round Escape Worth Considering

Most people think of Kennebunkport as a summer destination, but fall here is stunning—and winter is quietly spectacular. Twinkle lights wrap around seaside inns, snow dusts the porches of historic homes, and holiday markets give it a movie-set vibe. If you’re someone who loves cozy, this is your season.

Whether you're traveling with kids, planning a couple’s getaway, or just looking for peace, Kennebunkport delivers something that’s hard to put into words. It's beauty, stillness, and a little bit of magic—packaged in one of the most effortlessly charming towns on the East Coast.

Goose Rocks Beach is perfect for low-tide exploring and memory-making moments like this.
