Celebrating Canada Day in Banff with Adventures by Disney—red and white, mountain views, and all the magic.
We woke up on Day 4 of our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour to a town alive with celebration—it was Canada Day, and Banff was buzzing with pride, patriotism, and excitement. It ended up being one of the most joyful, jam-packed, and emotionally rich days of the trip.
By sunset, we’d biked scenic trails, explored hidden gardens, taken a gondola up Sulphur Mountain, caught a hometown parade, and toasted the night in one of the most iconic hotels in the world. It was the kind of day that could’ve been three, but with Disney-level planning, we fit it all in—without ever feeling rushed.
🇨🇦 What Is Canada Day?
Canada Day, celebrated each year on July 1st, marks the 1867 confederation that united Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia as one nation. It’s a day full of pride and reflection—kind of like the Fourth of July in the U.S., but with its own uniquely Canadian warmth.
Celebrations include:
Parades and cultural festivals
Fireworks and concerts
Indigenous performances and community ceremonies
Citizenship ceremonies for new Canadians
Outdoor fun, music, and food across the country
In Banff, Canada Day is woven into the landscape. There’s a deep respect for the land’s First Nations roots, and the entire town glows with energy. We saw Canadian flags on every corner, people in red and white, and performances that honored the Indigenous communities who call this land home.
It was one of those rare days that felt both exciting and meaningful—pure magic.
Our Canadian Adventure Guides kicked off Canada Day in full festive spirit—maple leaf shorts, trivia prizes, and all the Disney-level energy.
Our Canadian Adventure Guides were beaming with pride—dressed head to toe in red and white, maple leaves and all. They kicked off the morning with Canadian trivia (with tiny flag prizes, of course) and shared what the holiday meant to them personally. It was such a sweet, genuine way to start the day—festive, informative, and full of heart.
🚲 Morning Adventure: Biking the Bow River
We kicked off the morning with a guided bike ride along the Art in Nature Trail, a scenic route that hugs the Bow River and weaves past sculptures, historic stops, and alpine views that looked plucked from a painting.

Even better? The ride was accessible for everyone. Guests who didn’t want to bike could still experience each major stop, thanks to the ABD motorcoach that followed the route.
Trail Highlights Included:
The Trading Post – A rustic, cabin-like stop filled with early Alberta history and handmade treasures.
Waterfall Detour – A quick side hike led us to a hidden waterfall. Small but photo-worthy.
The Springs – Crystal-clear water framed by towering evergreens. A quiet, perfect moment to breathe it all in.
🌸 Secret Gem: Cascade of Time Gardens

Our final stop on the bike route was the Cascade of Time Gardens, a stunning public garden right at the base of Banff Avenue. It’s the kind of spot that somehow stays under the radar—but absolutely shouldn’t.
Winding stone paths, floral archways, and beautifully preserved heritage buildings made it feel like a secret escape just steps from the town center. We wandered, we took a million photos, and we could already hear the faint hum of Canada Day festivities growing louder in the background.
🚠 Sulphur Mountain Gondola Ride – A Signature Banff Experience, Disney-Style
The Sulphur Mountain gondola is one of the most iconic and popular experiences in Banff—and honestly, in the entire Canadian Rockies. It’s usually packed with tourists, long wait times, and lineups that stretch across the plaza.
But not for us.
Thanks to Adventures by Disney, our guides had everything pre-reserved and perfectly timed. We breezed past the crowds and stepped straight into our glass-enclosed gondolas, skipping the chaos entirely.
As we began the ride up, a surprise summer storm rolled in and clouds swallowed the mountaintops. But in classic Disney fashion, the experience stayed light and fun—because we knew what was waiting for us at the top.
🌧 Rainstorm & a Cozy Mountain Lunch
Just as we boarded the glass-enclosed gondolas, the skies darkened and a summer rainstorm rolled in. Visibility dropped, clouds cloaked the peaks, and for a moment it looked like our mountaintop views might disappear. But in true Disney fashion, the timing still worked out beautifully.
At the summit, we were ushered into Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen, where we warmed up with a full buffet lunch overlooking the Rockies. The setting was modern and airy, with huge windows, and the food was perfect for a chilly midday pause.
Lunch Highlights:
Alberta-style beef stew
Roasted salmon with seasonal vegetables
Creamy wild mushroom risotto
A full salad bar with toppings galore
Decadent desserts (including gluten-free options)
The meal typically costs around $25–40 CAD per adult, and for the convenience, quality, and setting, it was more than worth it.
☀️ The Clouds Part & We Climb to the Summit
By the time we finished lunch, the weather shifted again—dramatically. The clouds broke, the sun returned, and suddenly, we were surrounded by crystal-clear mountain views.
From the gondola station, we took the iconic wooden boardwalk up to the Sulphur Mountain summit and weather observatory—a trail of about 500 steps with scenic rest stops along the way.

This short hike is one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Banff, and it’s totally doable for kids, grandparents, or anyone in reasonable walking shape. Along the way, you’ll find plaques with facts about the mountain’s history, weather patterns, and wildlife.
At the top? A 360-degree view of Banff, the Bow River, surrounding mountain ranges, and even into neighboring valleys. It truly felt like standing on top of the world.
🎉 Canada Day Parade & Free Time in Banff
After our mountaintop adventure, we returned to the Fairmont Banff Springs with a few hours of free time to enjoy Banff at our own pace—a hallmark of Adventures by Disney’s thoughtful planning.
Some guests went for spa treatments or explored local hiking trails. Others opted for downtime by the Fairmont’s scenic outdoor pool, soaking in views of the surrounding peaks.
We decided to walk the 15-minute trail from the hotel to downtown Banff, where the Canada Day parade was just getting started. The beautiful mountain air and surprise animal sightings made the walk one of our favorite moments of our time in Banff.
Walking into Banff from the Fairmont—just a casual Canada Day view of the Bow River and Mount Rundle.
🇨🇦 The Parade
The energy was infectious. There were marching bands, traditional dancers, classic cars, and cultural showcases that made the whole town feel like one big celebration.
The Canada Day parade marching through downtown Banff—with Cascade Mountain as the ultimate backdrop.
Indigenous performers took center stage and the crowd responded with cheers, respect, and real emotion. It was the kind of parade that felt both personal and proud—big in spirit, even in a small town setting.
Every float, flag, and performance reminded us how special it was to be in Banff on Canada Day—and how lucky we were to experience it through the lens of this trip.
🛍 Shopping in Downtown Banff: Our Favorite Finds
After the parade, we wandered through Banff Avenue’s charming shops, taking full advantage of the festive energy (and maybe the excuse to treat ourselves). Banff has a mix of local boutiques, Canadian brands, and artisan gift stores that make souvenir hunting feel like part of the experience—not just a box to check.
Downtown Banff shopping always brings surprises—found our new cowboy friend while browsing the local shops.
Here were some of our favorite stops:
🧥 Roots – If you’re visiting Banff on Canada Day, this is a must. We picked up cozy hoodies with Banff branding, and gifts that felt distinctly Canadian without being touristy.
🍵 Banff Tea Co. – This tiny shop is packed with locally blended loose leaf teas in creative flavors you won’t find anywhere else. We left with bags for ourselves and a few as gifts—and honestly, wish we’d bought more.
🎨 A Touch of Canada – A lovely spot for handmade souvenirs, Indigenous art, and locally crafted goods. If you’re looking for something more meaningful than a magnet or keychain, this place delivers.
🧼 Rocky Mountain Soap Company – This brand is a Banff staple for a reason. Their natural bath and body products are made in Alberta and smell like actual mountain air.
🎄 The Spirit of Christmas – Yes, it’s open year-round. Yes, it’s magical even in July. And yes, we walked out with a Banff ornament for our tree—one of our favorite travel souvenir traditions!
Whether you’re looking for Canadian-made gifts, cozy apparel, or little luxuries, shopping in Banff is part of the charm. And on Canada Day, it felt even more special.
🍻 Dinner at Banff Ave Brewing Co. – Local Flavor, Laid-Back Vibes
We wrapped up the day with dinner at Banff Ave Brewing Co., a casual spot just off the main strip that’s beloved by locals and travelers alike. If you’re looking for a Banff restaurant with local beer, delicious comfort food, and a great atmosphere, this one checks every box.
The vibe was exactly what we wanted after a full day—buzzy but not too loud, relaxed but not sleepy. We grabbed a table upstairs overlooking the street below and dove into a menu filled with Alberta-inspired dishes and house-brewed beers.
Dinner at Banff Ave Brewing Co.—local brews, great eats, and the perfect way to wrap up Canada Day.
What we ordered—and devoured:
🍔 Bison Burger – Juicy, tender, and topped with all the right extras. This felt like the ultimate “you’re in Canada now” meal, and it absolutely delivered.
🍟 Poutine – Classic, no-nonsense, and delicious. The fries were crispy, the gravy was rich, and the cheese curds were exactly the right kind of squeaky.
🍺 Beer & Cider Flights – A perfect sampler for indecisive drinkers. We tried a mix of seasonal IPAs, refreshing ciders, and a surprisingly smooth stout brewed on-site.
🌾 Gluten-Free Menu Bonus – One of the most inclusive and thoughtful gluten-free menus we encountered in Banff. There were real options, not just substitutions—and everything was clearly marked and easy to navigate. A huge win for our group.
From the food to the drinks to the welcoming vibe, Banff Ave Brewing Co. was the perfect place to end a day packed with adventure, celebration, and unforgettable views.
🌿 Ideas for Your Free Afternoon in Banff
Spotted an elk just steps off the sidewalk—only in Banff can wildlife stroll right alongside your shopping route.
If you find yourself with a few unscheduled hours in Banff (lucky you!), here are some memorable ways to make the most of it:
Banff Upper Hot Springs
Tucked high on Sulphur Mountain, these steamy mineral springs have been drawing travelers since the 1800s—and for good reason. Soaking in warm, therapeutic waters with a front-row view of the surrounding peaks is the ultimate “pinch me” moment. A peaceful, scenic reset after a day of adventuring.Cave and Basin National Historic Site
This isn’t just a pretty stop—it’s the birthplace of Canada’s national parks. Inside, you’ll find natural thermal springs, a cave with a fascinating backstory, and boardwalks that wind through a landscape rich in history and meaning. It’s equal parts nature walk and cultural moment.Tunnel Mountain Hike
Despite the name, there’s no tunnel here—but don’t let that stop you. This is a local go-to for a reason: it’s short, sweet, and rewards you with panoramic views over the town of Banff, the Bow River, and the surrounding ranges. If you’re looking to stretch your legs and snap a few photos, this one delivers.Wildlife Spotting Around Town
Banff is one of those rare places where you might pass an elk on your morning coffee run. Keep your eyes peeled for deer near the town, big-horned sheep on the slopes, or bears foraging in the distance (from a safe distance, of course). A simple walk can turn into a full-on wildlife encounter.Banff Park Museum
Step inside this historic log building and you’re instantly transported. The Banff Park Museum dates back to 1903 and holds thousands of vintage natural history specimens. It’s quirky, old-school, and oddly charming.
Evening at the Fairmont
Evenings at the Rundle Bar feel like a scene from a movie—craft cocktails, cozy corners, and castle vibes in the heart of Banff.
We capped off the evening with a cocktail at the Rundle Bar, located within the Fairmont Banff Springs. The bar offers a cozy and elegant atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. The menu features a range of signature cocktails, local craft beers, and fine wines.
After our drinks, we enjoyed our last night in our beautiful hotel room, taking in the stunning views and reflecting on our incredible day. The luxurious accommodations and attentive service made our stay at the Fairmont truly unforgettable. It was the perfect way to cap off our time in Banff before heading to Lake Louise the next day.
